Service Co – operative bank Kattappana is one of the earliest co – operative societies in the highrange, Idukki District. Established in the year of 1955 by late Mr. Mathew Pottamkulam with a capital of Rs 1000/- as a multi purpouse co – operative cociety, Service Co – operative bank Kattappana stands head and shoulders ahead of its peers having put in 60 years of excellent service. The service co – operative society was working among the farmers of highrange through distributing seeds and fertilizers , supporting the poorest of the society through its ration stores. Then it was elevated to the status of a co – operative bank in the year of 1961.
After becoming a co – operative bank, it expands its activities by receiving deposits, providing loans to farmers, distributing government aids and subsidies to agriculture, providing gold loans, establishing consumer stores and thus developed an inseparable relationship with the people of Kattappana. In the days of inception, the society was given guidance by, Late Mr. V T Sebastian Ex MLA, Mr. Devasya Poomattam, Mr. Joseph Varkey Kalayathinal, Mr. K J Mathew Kulakkattuvayalil, Mr. Ulahannan Mathayi Kochukudiyil. Then the bank could purchase 22 cents of land and build its own office. In this regard the contributions of former presidents Mr. Thomas Joseph Ex MLA, Mr. P J Francis Pulickal are also valuable. This bank is a living testimony of the loyalty of thousands of its members who had life long relationship with this bank. Though the bank had to face many challenges like the advent of nationalized scheduled banks, decline in the agriculture field, crisis in the co – operative sector, it could weather all such storms and is still remains relevant through the dedicated and committed service of its leadership and its employees.
For the past 30 years Mr Joy Vettikkuzhy leads this institution as the president of Service co-operative bank Kattappana. In this period of time, particularly after the year of 2000 Service co-operative bank Kattappana having many achievements, and that put the bank in head and shoulders ahead of its peers.
